Hammock camping offers some exciting environmental advantages, not the least of which is the potential to reduce the overuse so common at many backcountry campsites. Without harming trees, soil, or ground-cover plants, hammock use can be benign and offers a wise alternative to tents or tarps. Our forested backcountry can simply absorb hammock campers much more easily than it can ground -ampers.
Hammocks allow an easier way to follow the new -A-ilderness ethics promoted by the Leave No Trace -irogram. This worthy program strives to reduce our adverse impact on the environment through education, practice and example. All hammock campers are strongly urged to join and support the Leave No Trace organization (see the information box).

The damage caused by the repeated use of tent sites. The choicest sites,
even deep in the wilderness, are generally the most abused. All tent users,
of course, search for the same thing: level ground free of brush and rocks.
So much the better if the site offers scenic values and happens to be
near a water source. Everyone wants to camp in the same place; there just
simply aren't enough suitable sites. On many occasions I have watched
in dismay the continuous parade of tent campers using a single site; as
soon as one party packs up and departs, a new party takes its place.
